Once a child is born, we immediately try to spot the traits he/she got from his/her parents. It could be the hair color, the shape of lips, or the color of the eyes. But this is not always the case. Babies could also inherit their parent’s medical conditions. This is the magic of human genetics.

Heredity or biological inheritance is a way of passing down traits and even medical conditions from one generation to the next. This is made through sexual reproduction or artificial insemination.

Heredity works by passing some of the genes and DNA of both parents to their offspring. This is why you can see the child having similar characteristics to one or both of his/her parents.

Now, let’s talk about genes and DNA. Genes are sections of DNA that are found in every human cell. These cells also carry your traits and medical and hereditary conditions you have.

Inside those cells are what we call Chromosomes. These microscopic cells are responsible for making you who you are.

Each person has 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 each). The 22 pairs of chromosomes are the same in every person and they are called autosomes. The 23rd pair is the sex chromosomes; X chromosomes for males and Y chromosomes for females.

How Hereditary Conditions are Passed Down?

A child will inherit 23 chromosomes from each parent making it 46 in total. Now, if ever one parent has conditions, they will most likely be passed to the child.

But it’s not always the case. There are scenarios where a child does not get his/her parent’s conditions except for traits and characteristics.

Why is It Not Possible to Change Hereditary Conditions?

Your DNA is a blueprint of who you are, you cannot take it out. These cells are embedded into your body and without them, you will not exist. Trillions of cells work inside your body and they function as a system and you simply cannot change that.

Hereditary conditions include some of the genetic diseases we receive either from our parents through chromosomes or those diseases are caused because of mutation of genes. That is why it is not possible to change hereditary conditions. It is a part of you.

Because of technological advancement, there is now a chance to cure some kinds of genetic disorders. The Human Genome Project is a possible way to track the exact gene that contains the condition. However, this project still has a long way to go. But, this is a sign that one day, we can never suffer from unwanted conditions and illness ever again.


Common health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity do not have a single genetic cause. Therefore they cannot be passed down. But, a person can still acquire these conditions due to lifestyle and environmental factors, such as exercise, diet, or pollutant exposures

Family history is often one of the strongest risk factors for common disease complexes such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and psychiatric illnesses. Although this does not assure that your child will inherit if ever you have one of these diseases.
