Kitten 101: Can Cats Eat Peaches/Nectarines? Yes!

By Last Updated: November 25th, 2022Categories: Pet Pedia

I have a cat as many people do. I like peaches as many people do. But I will not feed my cat with peaches or nectarines and other fruits even though a lot of people will.

Though peaches are non-toxic to cats and won’t have a severe bad influence on them, I still won’t provide them with any of this fruit actively.

You need to remember one thing which is that cats are all meat-eating animals. You should feed them meat, not fruits and vegetables that they can hardly digest.

Still, if your cat loves the taste of peach, you can offer your fur kid some peach flesh once a few days.

Can Cats Eat Peaches

Part 1: Can Cats Eat Peaches

Yes, cats can eat peaches. This is a non-toxic stone fruit for all cats and dogs.

However, there’s a very small chance that your cat will be allergic to peaches. If any similar syndrome presents like:

  • rash
  • serious and repeated vomiting and diarrhea
  • or being listless and depressed
  • etc.

You should exclude peaches from your feline’s food list. No allergy symptoms? You still shouldn’t feed your cat with too much peach flesh.

Part 2: Should I Provide Peaches to My Cat

All felines eat meat. The close relatives of cats are lions, tigers, and leopards. Can you imagine these vicious big cats eating vegetables? Nope.

As their small-sized relative, cats are similar – they don’t eat fruits like peaches naturally.

But somehow, the smell or flavor of peach gets your cat curious. And this fur kid starts the first bite and couldn’t stop it. If this happens, you don’t need to get anxious or worried at all. Cats can eat and digest a small amount of peach flesh.

But once they eat too much, their digestive system that’s built for meat cannot handle an excessive amount of peach.

As a result, they will suffer from indigestion and inappetence. For the coming hours, your cat might refuse to eat or drink. Also, some cats will vomit or have diarrhea just to discharge what they cannot digest.

In a word, you can feed your cat with peaches, but always keep an eye on the amount. 3 to 5 ounces a week will be fair enough.

Part 3: Is Peach Good for Cats

Consuming peach flesh in moderation will do good to your fluffy creature’s health.

First of all, 85% of the peach flesh is water.

We’re taught that we should make our cats drink water as much as possible. The reason for this is that cats have tiny and weak kidneys that cannot properly process all the intake of sodium (salt). If things get worse, a cat will end up having kidney failure.

If your fur kid is not very fond of drinking water, several ounces of peach flesh (or some other fruits like pineapples) can be an additional water source.

Besides, peach contains many vitamins and minerals that make your cat healthier. But this doesn’t mean you should feed them with a lot of peach flesh. If they can’t even digest the food, how can they absorb the nutrition inside?

Part 4: How Do I Prepare The Peach for My Cat

If your cat is really into peaches, there’re a few things that you need to watch out for. You can’t just put a peach before your cat to let it have a random bite. This is not recommended. You should:

Peel the peach

Unless the peaches are picked from your own farm or garden. Otherwise, peel the peach before you feed it to your kitten.

You never know if there are leftovers of chemicals on the peel. As mentioned, the kidneys of a cat are weak. They cannot handle the chemicals properly and can be easily poisoned.

Take Away the Seed

The seed of a peach is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. Remove it before your cat is going to eat it. Just in case they will crack the shell of the seed and get to access the amygdalin, a chemical compound that will break down into cyanide, the deadly poison that we can always hear from the movies and series.

Never Feed Your Cat with Canned Peach

Canne peaches are even bad for us, how can you feed the tiny little creature with this preserved food? It does worse harm to the little body of your kitten.

The heavy sugar, artificial additives, and various preservations are certainly not the nutrition that your cat needs. So, never feed them any canned fruits.

Caution: Keep Your Cats Away From Peach Trees

Gardening lovers and farm owners, keep your cats away from the peach trees.

The fruit and blossom are the only things that are safe for the human body and your fluffy pets. You can have peaches and pick the peach blossom for tea, oil, or dessert, but never lay your hand on anything else.

Keep your kid and pet away from the toxic leaves, branches, stems, and seeds.

These parts of the peach tree contain the compound we mentioned: amygdalin. When your cat takes in any of this substance, it will turn into cyanide. This is one of the most deadly toxic ever found. It will inhibit the oxygenation of blood. The heart, brain, nerves, and other organs like the liver and kidneys will be in serious damage.

Apart from peach trees, you should also know that this compound is found on trees and seeds of other stone fruits like apples, plums, apricots, and cherries.
